Lost your Joomla admin password?

Passwords in Joomla cannot be retrieved because they are stored encrypted in the database. As administrator of the Joomla site, however, you can always reset a lost password of another user.

But if you have also lost the administrator password, that will not work, and you can use the method below to make sure you can log in again.
Log in to your Joomla database via phpMyAdmin.

  • Go to the table 'jos_users' (or replace 'jos' with the prefix you chose during installation)
  • Find the record with the name 'Administrator' and username 'admin' (replace these with other names if applicable)
  • Click the 'edit' button on the left of the record (the pencil icon)
  • Replace the value in the 'password' field with the value '21232f297a57a5a743894a0e4a801fc3' (without quotes).
  • Click 'Go' (or 'Start') and save the change
  • You can now log in again with the username concerned and the password 'admin' (without quotes).
  • Now set a stronger password for this account in the Joomla backend.
