Chapter 16 · 16.12
Tasks on your iPhone and Android at the same time
Do you use an iPhone yourself and your partner or colleague an Android phone, or do you have both? With your WebOké Nextcloud, you work together in the same task lists: what one person ticks off, the other sees as ticked off too. Your Nextcloud is the centre where everything comes together.
How it works
| Device | Where do you see the tasks? | How do you connect? |
|---|---|---|
| Browser | The Tasks app in your Nextcloud | Nothing needed (Tasks: lists, deadlines and subtasks) |
| iPhone and iPad | The Reminders app | The CalDAV account you also use for your calendar (Calendar and contacts on the iPhone and iPad) |
| Android | A tasks app such as Tasks.org or jtx Board | DAVx5 (Calendar and contacts on Android with DAVx5 and Tasks on your phone: Reminders on the iPhone, Tasks.org on Android) |
| Mac | The Reminders app | CalDAV account (Calendar and Contacts on the Mac) |
Step 1: create the list in your Nextcloud
Always create a shared task list in your Nextcloud, not on your phone. Open the Tasks app and click Add list, or create a New calendar with task list in Calendar. Want to share the list with someone else? Use the share button next to the list in Tasks (see Tasks: lists, deadlines and subtasks), or share it from Calendar, just like a calendar (see Sharing, publishing and embedding calendars in your website).
Step 2: iPhone
- Make sure you've added the CalDAV account (see Calendar and contacts on the iPhone and iPad) and that Reminders is switched on for that account.
- Open Reminders. Your Nextcloud lists appear under the account name.
- Create new tasks in those lists, not in a list under iCloud or On My iPhone.
Step 3: Android
- First install a tasks app, such as Tasks.org or jtx Board, and then (or again) DAVx5.
- Open DAVx5, tap your account and tick the task lists on the CalDAV tab.
- Open your tasks app: your Nextcloud lists appear in it.
What to watch out for
- Not everything from Reminders carries over. The newer features of Reminders on the iPhone, such as tags, sections and some types of subtasks, only work in iCloud lists. In a Nextcloud list, the title, notes, date, priority and ticking off work fine.
- Subtasks are best created in the Tasks app in your Nextcloud. On the iPhone, you sometimes see them as regular tasks.
- Syncing takes a moment. On Android, DAVx5 fetches changes at a fixed interval. Want to see it straight away? Let DAVx5 sync manually.
- Editing at the same time. If you both change the same task at the same moment, the last change wins. Agree on who keeps track of which task.
Not working? Take a look at Calendar or contacts don't show up on the phone.
